ORAL HEALTH IN KOSOVO RESEARCH PRESENTED

6 March 2020

At a ceremony organized at the AAB Theater “Faruk Begolli”, where the findings of a two-month research on the importance of oral health were presented, students of the Faculty of Dentistry completed the activities of marking the Dentist’s Day. Students conducted this two-month survey in almost all Kosovo settlements, through surveys and questionnaires conducted mainly with adolescents and persons over 65 years of age.

The purpose of this research, according to the students, was to assess the condition of dental prostheses, to learn about oral hygiene care, how to properly clean the tooth brush and the prosthesis, and to raise awareness of visits to the dentist.

According to the survey done with 140 seniors, 58.8% of them remove the dental prosthesis at night while 41.5% do not. Most of the seniors remove these dental prostheses daily, a small number remove them a few times a week, while some never remove them on a weekly basis. In conclusion, students have found that oral and prosthetic hygiene in the elderly is not enviable, as most respondents were unaware of the correct cleaning of the prosthesis and its maintenance.

Our students have also collected data on high school students. Statistics show that 17.1% of them brush their teeth once a day, 46.7% twice a day, 32.7% more than twice a day and 3.1% do not brush their teeth daily.

Upon completion of this activity, the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Sc. Astrit Kuçi, congratulated all the students who were part of this activity and this research. “Aside from the knowledge that you gain, you are also slowly and confidently entering the academic world, especially in the difficult field of research” said Mr. Kuci.

Whereas, the Vice-rector Shemsedin Vehapi, said that this initiative is made special by the work of the students of the Faculty of Dentistry and that AAB College will always offer selfless cooperation and support, especially in these voluntary works aimed at sensitizing and training students on the profession they have chosen.

This research and other activities would not have been successful without the help and support of the professors who contributed to it, such as Mimoza Selmanaj, Teuta Bicaj, Avdyl Shoshi, Bleron Azizi and Flora Morina.
