At the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo (ASHAK), a roundtable titled “Advancing Women and Girls in Science and Academia in Kosovo” was held, bringing together representatives of academic institutions, international organizations, and civil society to discuss challenges and opportunities for empowering women in science and academic leadership.
During the meeting, it was emphasized that investing in science is an investment in the future, and that every girl who enters education gains not only a diploma, but also a place in society. It was highlighted that the challenge does not lie in the lack of successful women, but in the lack of space and opportunities for advancement at key stages of their careers.
Discussions also underlined that women’s representation in high-level decision-making positions in academia remains limited, with the gap being particularly pronounced in fields such as engineering, technology, and science. Panelists emphasized the need for stronger supportive policies, including mechanisms for financial support in scientific research, professional networking, and the implementation of gender equality strategies.
Participants in this event included the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Venera Llunji, as well as professors Eriona Ajvazi, Roberta Bajrami, Kosovare Ukshini, Teuta Sahatçija (who was also part of the second panel), and Fellenza Pula. During the open discussion, they engaged with representatives of institutions and organizations such as UN Women, the Gender Equality Agency, and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo.
Participants emphasized the importance of transforming such initiatives into a regular platform for cooperation, with concrete recommendations and steps toward advancing women and girls in science and academia in Kosovo.
