Musicology

Aim and program profile

The aim of this program is interaction with other theoritical and practical disciplines of music and other above mentioned fields to functionate as follows:
– In the First Cycle of studies to prepare high specialists for general musicological research.
– In the Second Cycle of studies, to prepare close specialists for fundamental researches and studies in the above mentioned fields, to form habits and opportunities for independent scientific research.
Students who graduate in Musicology should have demonstrated skills, knowledge and artistic understanding in the field of music, they can apply their skills, knowledge and their artistic understanding in the field of music in a way that shows a professional approach towards their work or profession, and also have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (in the field of music) to give their judgments on art of music. They will be able to communicate artistic understanding, ideas, information, problems and solutions for the two audiences- specific and non-specific. Students of Musicology have developed these practical / creative study skills that are necessary for them to continue further studies with a high degree of autonomy.

Expected learning outcomes

Students who graduate in Musiciology and attain a Bachelor Degree will be able to: • Have demonstrated skills, knowledge and artistic understanding in the field of music
• Can apply their skills, knowledge and artistic understanding in the field of music in a manner that indicates a professional approach to their work or vocation, and have competences demonstrated practically/creatively as well as through devising and sustaining arguments and solving problems within their field of study
• Have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (usually within the field of music) to inform judgements within their practical/creative activity that include reflection on artistic and, where relevant, social, scientific or ethical issues;
• Can communicate information, artistic understanding, ideas, problems and olutions to both specialist and nonspecialist audiences
• Have developed those learning and practical/creative skills that are necessary for them to continue to undertake further study with a high degree of autonomy .
Skills acquired: • Analysing and interpreting music-related historical and documentary sources.
• Analysing teaching and learning situations within the field of musical education.
• Applying scientific methodology to the study of music.
• Developing the ability to communicate correctly and transmit acquired knowledge to both specialised sectors and the public in general.
• Distinguishing different methodologies for conducting musicological research and research into the didactics of music.
• Distinguishing types of music according to their cultural areas and social contexts.
• Mastering computer technology in order to use the different types of music software that can be found on the market.
• Written presentation, with the quality that is required by a scientific journal, of the results of the research work carried out.
• Identifying the areas covered by music teachers.
• Conducting archival, periodical and bibliographical research activities related to the field of music.
• Recognising different contexts (social, economic, artistic, etc.) that surround the music profession.
