Biography
Prof. Dr. Izet Sadiku was born on August 10, 1968, in Hajvali, Prishtina, where he completed his primary and secondary education. In 2000, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Prishtina, with a degree in “General Medicine.” In 2008, he completed his specialization in Infectious Diseases, and in 2009 he earned a Master of Medical Sciences degree. In 2013, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Medicine in Tirana on the topic: “Clinical, laboratory, diagnostic characteristics and treatment of tularemia in Kosovo during 2006-2011.”
His professional career includes high-level leadership and academic positions in Kosovo’s health sector. He has served as Political Advisor to the Minister of Health (2015), Deputy Minister of Health (2015-2017; 2020), and Director of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases (2021). He has also been Political Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister (2009-2012) and Advisor for Health and Education (2005-2007). Currently, he is the Director of Health in Prishtina.
Academically, since 2003 he has been an assistant professor at the University of Prishtina, later lecturing at colleges during 2014-2016 at ‘Rezonanca’ and during 2009-2012 at FAMA College. Since 2015, he has been a professor at AAB College. From 2013 until 2019, he served as Head of Intra-Hospital Infections at the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo (UCCK). As Deputy Minister, he led important projects to improve maternal and child care, operationalize pediatric cardiac surgery, open a new cardiac surgery clinic, and establish the microbiology laboratory at UCCK.
During his continuous engagement in promoting and preserving public health, Dr. Sadiku contributed during the COVID-19 period as acting Director of Infectious Diseases and later as Director of Health during 2022-2025 by organizing high-impact awareness campaigns among citizens, such as: The breast cancer awareness campaign “Race for the Cure” – a multi-month awareness campaign for regular check-ups and early detection, culminating in a run dedicated to survivors and those who lost their lives to the disease, the campaign included awareness lectures in high schools in the capital, mosques, cathedrals, customs, police, and SOS village beneficiaries, awareness through sports activities and media, including branding a bus with awareness messages. This campaign achieved a 100% increase in mammography screenings performed in the capital over the past two years, Diabetes awareness campaign, Initiation of the opening of a Counseling Room for Health Education and Promotion for the Management of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), aiming to empower citizens to better understand non-communicable diseases, recognize risk factors, and take preventive and management measures, Organization of health caravans promoting healthy lifestyle choices, Opening of Counseling Rooms for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, and Syphilis at the Primary Health Care facility in the Student neighborhood the first of its kind at the primary care level in the capital, Publication of the journal “Health of the Capital”.
